Coastal GasLink achieves significant milestones – approximately 70% complete overall

Coastal GasLink achieves significant milestones

As Coastal GasLink launches one of its most important construction seasons yet this summer, the project is approximately 70% complete overall and on track to full mechanical completion in 2023.

“It’s quite significant when you think about the complex and challenging nature of building critical energy infrastructure that traverses 670-kilometres-and two mountain ranges,” says Bevin Wirzba, Coastal GasLink President. “We are seeing the completion of many critical components of the project, and recently celebrated 100% completion of 2 of the eight sections the 670-kilometre pipeline is made up of. By this time next year, nearly all sections of the project are anticipated to be mechanically complete.”

Construction of one the most significant pieces of infrastructure on the project – the Wilde Lake Compressor facility near Chetwynd at the eastern end of the route – is also nearly complete.

Recently, Coastal GasLink, along with LNG Canada, toured the Wilde Lake Compressor Station to witness firsthand the incredible feat of constructing TC Energy’s largest ever natural gas compressor facility in a single phase.

“I am feeling really energized,” shared Carol Anne Bransby-Williams, Project Director, Facilities Implementation who led the tour with LNG Canada and representatives from the joint venture partnership. “This is a significant piece of infrastructure and with construction completion on the horizon, it feels like we are getting very close to that finish line.”

Coastal GasLink is unprecedented in so many ways, and that extends beyond construction milestones to our commitment to delivering a world-class project that will provide economic benefits for Indigenous communities, British Columbians and Canadians for future generations.

With over $1.4 billion awarded in contracting opportunities to Indigenous and local communities to date, together with the recent announcement to sell 10% equity in the project to our Indigenous partners, Coastal GasLink is proud to be leading the way in terms of how energy projects are advanced in Canada.

Chief Justin Napoleon of the Saulteau First Nation is one of the many nations we are excited to have join us as equity partners.  “We want to be partners; we want to be involved in the lifecycle of the project from ground-breaking to reclamation,” said Chief Napoleon recently as he signed his Nation onto the equity options agreement. “Having the option to get involved in equity opens up the opportunity to have long-term economic benefit from a project that will be there for years,” he expressed.

These are the first of many significant milestones and achievements anticipated to be completed by next year, and our success is the direct result of the dedication of our team, and the collaboration of our workers, contractors, Indigenous partners, and local communities.

At Coastal GasLink, we are incredibly proud of our team and community partners whose dedication and support have enabled us to make the extraordinary possible.”

“Similar to many infrastructure projects under construction during the pandemic, Coastal GasLink has been subject to cost escalations. Yet, thanks to the collaboration we’ve witnessed across the board, we have overcome these challenges, and are on track to deliver a world-class natural gas pipeline to mechanical completion by the end of 2023.”

As project construction reaches full peak employment this summer of 6,000 workers, many of whom are from Indigenous and local communities, Coastal GasLink is closing in on the day when construction is finished and the benefits of our extraordinary legacy are being felt by Indigenous and local communities, and around the world for decades to come.
